Assessment of Visual Function and Quality of Life Related to Vision for the Homeless

Abstract

|
Purpose: To present basic data for visual condition of the homeless by assessing the visual function and the quality of life related to the vision of the homeless.
Methods: In this study, 147 people(129 male, 18 female) in Seoul and Daejeon were surveyed from June 2015 to July by using Korean version NEI-VFG-25 to find out visual function and the quality of life related to the vision of the homeless. 18 people out of 147 people who participated in the survey but did not disclose their age were excluded from analysis. The result of the survey was converted to the lowest score 0 and the highest score 100, Higher score was rated as better vision.
Results: The scores of overall health condition and vision health of the homeless surveyed were 29.08 and 56.31, respectively. The scores of distance vision, near vision, eye pain, color vision and peripheral vision were 59.96, 52.39, 60.99, 71.40 and 62.24, respectively. The score of social function, mental health, the limitation of role, and dependence in terms of quality of life related to the vision was 67.89, 56.72, 43.60 and 70.77, respectively. The quality of life related to the vision showed significant correlation with visual acuity(p<0.05) but did not show significant correlation with age(p>0.05).
Conclusions: The visual acuity of the homeless was found to be the poorest in case of a near distance, and there were many opinions insisting that their current vision limits achievement of work. Since the quality of life related to the vision of the homeless has a significant correlation with visual acuity, it is considered to be necessary that social concern and support on the vision care of the homeless.
